Hi,
I recently downloaded and installed the public beta of Vista. I did a clean install on an empty disk. The install went ahead without a problem, however I can't connect to the internet from Vista because it doesn't recognise either my Netgear FA311 Network adapter (one of the most common network cards ever... surprised Vista doesn't have in-built support for it) or my SpeedTouch 330 DSL modem (USB).
Can anyone advise of where I might be able to get drivers for these? I have checked the manufacturers websites, and not found anything of great use. I have also tried googling for drivers, and still come up blank.
Thanks in advance of any help,
Andi

Try from Device Manager and update device from internet.
Tried that just, no success.
When I installed Vista I was in a similar situation. It could not recognize my Macronix MX98715-based card (I have no idea what brand the card itself is). I also tried to update the driver online through the device manager and it did not work. So I simply decided to try to use the same driver it uses in XP, which was a generic driver that came with XP for Macronix based cards. To do that I simply went rebooted into XP (I'm dual booting XP and Vista). Went into the XP device manager to get the file name of the driver it was using. Then I copied that file into a folder on my Vista desktop, then I also searched the XP partition for the INF file that contained the driver description. When I found it I also copied it to the folder on my Vista desktop. Then I had to edit that INF file a bit. I simply put a semi-colon in front of the layout line to comment it out. Then I rebooted into Vista and pointed the Device Manager to that folder on my desktop and it worked! Though it did warn that the driver was not signed, which is fine by me as I know it works fine in XP.

Surprise Surprise Surprise! Redmond does it again. They "improved" windows again to the tune of several hundred dollars out of the user's pockets. My Macronix NIC won't work either and Macronix isn't providing a Vista driver.

Whatever..
Blame Microsoft because they change the driver model to be more stable, your hardware vendor decides their product is to old to continue supporting, or THEY want more money from you... How much money is Microsoft going to make from your purchase of a current NIC?

I'm experiencing the same issue as Andi with my Alcatel 330 modem. You advice is moot if one cannot connect to the Internet. Therefore, any other suggestions?
Thanks.

Obviously the original poster can connect to the internet, otherwise how did he post this?
Just because he can get to the internet does not mean that Netgear or SpeedTouch have Vista drivers for his products.
His solution is either to get drivers if they exist, or to get another network adapter and modem that he can get drivers for. There are no other solutions.

Not neccessarily, he probably has a second computer that he installed Vista on so he has internet on one computer and cannot connect with Vista.

I too had trouble setting up my speedtouch 330 broadband modem.
I found if i used the xp64 bit drivers that iu had been sucessfully using in winxp64 and set up as i had been using i.e set pppo a using to broadband settings found on my isp set up disc it would appear to fail giving a message set up has stopped and must close.
However is i whent into connection manager and by clicking on the icon bottom righthand of screen i was then able to setting up a dial up connection with o ass phone number.
This connection would only work through connection manager not by connetiong by internet icon.
If i rebooted the machine this connection would fail and check in properties the isdn modem would have a cross against it and i would then have to run driver load again and the connection would again work but only until i rebooted.
Later i found that i if i ran driver installation and used pppoe not pppoa as instructed by my isp when i set up a connection using connection manager and selecting set up CONNECTION TO THE INTERNET MY broadband modem was now found as minport driver.
Using these settings they remained stable even when rebooting the machine.
As before though could only connect using connection using icon bottom righthand.
Hope this helpos some of you.
If anyone has a better solution then please respond

Judoka,
I've made some progress where I've actually been able to install the driver and have Vista reporting that the modem's driver is running properly. I am however unable to connect to the Internet! Doh!
I, like you, have my modem showing up as a miniport driver but with "WAN" before miniport. Is this what your PC is also showing? I have spent considerable time troubleshooting my system to get it to connect to the Internet, but have failed.
Any input would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Judoka,
I've tried and tried again your solution to using the usb modem with Vista, but I've about given up. I've spent hours. I'm tempted to simply go out and purchase another modem, but I don't know which one is compatible with this OS. I contacted Alcatel and they weren't exactly sure when drivers for Vista would become available.
Is there something that you neglected to add to your solution? Any help would be greatly appreciated. The driver manager states that the modem is installed and working properly, but no matter what I did, I couldn't connect. I tried following your solution step by step.
Thanks.

Blame Microsoft because they change the driver model to be more stable, your hardware vendor decides their product is to old to continue supporting, or THEY want more money from you... How much money is Microsoft going to make from your purchase of a current NIC?

Hi,
I recently downloaded and installed the public beta of Vista.
Thanks in advance of any help,
Andi
Judoka,
I've tried and tried again your solution to using the usb modem with Vista, but I've about given up.
Thanks.

Hi GR
I have retraced my steps and have listed out as best i can the way i was able to set up broadband:
Run speed touch 64bit driver R4.0.0.5 select provider any then service PPPoE Press next
VPI.VCI setting for my ISP(Wanadoo UK) is 0.38 you will have to check this with your own ISP or search through folders in any set up disc you may have to find them. Normally they are in a file named phonebook.ini
Set up wizard will now ask for your user name and password. Enter details then press next.
Wizard now asks connect to internet yes or no. Select no press next.
You will now get a pop-up saying Speedtouch wizard has stopped working. Click close program.
Now double click the network icon bottom righthand of screen. If you do not have an icon then control panel and select network centre.
Once in network centre select set up connection or network.
Select connect to internet.
Select new connection
Select broadband PPPoe
Type in user name and password.
That should set up your connection. Remember if you want to connect to the internet you must right click network icon bottom right then select connect to internet then connection you wish to use then press connect. If you have no icon then as before go to control panel and network centre and connect there.
I hope this works for you this time.

Like everyone else in this thread, I too am having teething probz with my SpeedTouch 330 USB modem so I came here looking for a possible answer to my connection problems.
Initially I thought to look for Vista drivers but, as already mentioned, there are none on Alcatel's site & Google turns nothing up so I'm going to give the 64bit driver R4.0.0.5 as suggested here.
It's the "Please Activate Online within 13 days or Windows won't work" that bothers me!?, it's a Beta so you would think M$ would give people longer than 13 days to resolve any possible problems that may make it impossible for them to activate Vista?.
Just for the record, Vista is installed Dual-Boot with XP Pro & failed to install drivers for the following: HP ScanJet 2100C Multimedia Controller Device (SB Live?) PCI Input Device (Joystik port on SB Live?) SM Bus Controller and, as mentioned the SpeedTouch 330 USB DSL modem.
Other than the connectivity problem & the usual finding your way around a new OS, I actually quite like the look of Vista. I won't even go into the networking & reporting home stuff I've read though!.
Note: Buy More RAM!, I have 1GbDDR400 atm but at least another 512Mb~1Gb wouldn't go amiss!?.
Regards, Andy.

Judoka can you tell me what model of SpeedTouch 330 do you have please?,
It shouldn't make any difference whether it's the silver one, the 'green' one or whatever? but I've been trying to re-create your actions outlined in your last post but as far as receiving a message 'a connection had been made & my modem was now ready for use' but the modem's lights were red (left one) & off (right one) instead of both green. I rebooted & they both became green which I thought was looking promising but still no connection.
Did you install the 32-bit drivers first then try the 64-bit ones afterwards or did you just use the 64-bit drivers from the off?.
Regards, Esskie.
PS: I know not all will agree to this but, as an 'observation', Vista Beta tends to remind me of *nix somehow!?!?!. Can't quite place it?, maybe something to do whith what theme or whatever or maybe I've been sitting in front of it for too long getting nowhere!! lol!.
Regards, Andy..
